More and more adult children today are caring for aging parents and dealing with the challenges this brings.  Estimates for 2016 show over five million Americans have some type of memory impairment and can’t be safely left alone. This adds more stress to families caring for aging loved ones.

Aspen Senior Center gives seniors with mild to moderate memory loss the chance to socialize and do fun activities in a safe, caring way so their families can work or have a break.  They also provide healthy snacks and a meal during the day.

Aspen Senior Center is a licensed adult day care center, but we think of ourselves as a fun activity center for seniors needing memory care. Our goal is to help seniors with memory loss from Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia stay active for as long as possible.  We do this by providing fun activities, exercising, socializing and eating healthy food.  This is called Cognasium, which means “gymnasium for the brain.”

This program has four parts:

  1. Mental stimulation (games, puzzles, music, art, crafts, etc.)
  2. Physical exercise (sit & dance, tossing games, balloon volleyball, etc.)
  3. Socializing (making new friends, reminiscing, sign-a-longs, etc.)
  4. Good nutrition (great tasting food that seniors enjoy eating)

Many seniors are alone much of the day, watching television or sleeping. This lack of activity causes the brain to go dormant.  At Aspen Senior Center our specially trained staff participate in activities with our clients, doing games, art, singing, exercise, and socialization. Our staff prepares fun, nutritious snacks and meals and our clients go home well fed with a sense of accomplishment.  They also sleep better at night.

According to Sylvia Brunisholz, LCSW, CMC and Family Support Counselor:

“Aspen Senior Center has changed both family caregivers and care recipients’ lives with their progressive person-center program. I was impressed to see the changes… return to our care recipients and observe the decrease in depression and anxiety in our family caregivers.”
